Natural Remedies to Aid Relaxation and Sleep

Griffonia simplicifolia 5-htp extract

5-HTP (Griffonia simplicifolia) Seed Extract

5-HTP (5-Hydroxytryptophan) is an extract of Griffonia simplicifolia seeds from coastal West Africa. It has been used clinically for more than 30 years for its ability to increase production of serotonin, which is very important to all of the body’s systems. Serotonin deficiency has been implicated in mood disorders, appetite control, premenstrual syndrome, autism, eating disorders, fibromyalgia, appetite control, the pain phase of migraine, and other conditions and disorders.

Some serotonin is converted by our pineal gland into melatonin, the hormone that controls our sleep cycle. Thus, serotonin deficiency is also linked to insomnia and other sleep disorders. According to medical journals and reviews it is proven that 5-HTP helps improve moods of depressed patients and may aid in weight loss, improve sleep patterns and help panic attacks. More info

Hop (Humullus lupus) flower resin

hops

Hops is a tonic, hypnotic, febrifuge, antilithic, and anthelmintic. They are principally used for their sedative or hypnotic action producing sleep, removing restlessness, and abating pain. Historically, there were also many other variable uses of this herb, including; treatments for indigestion, tuberculosis, colitis, bladder infection, neuralgia, and leg ulcers. Hops tea is a nerve tonic, a sedative, and a muscle relaxant (anti-spasmodic). Thus, it is good for intestinal colic. The herb also acts as an astringent and antibiotic, and is good for digestive tract infections. Hops is a remedy that has a marked relaxing effect upon the central nervous system, used extensively for the treatment of insomnia. It eases tension and anxiety, and may be used where this tension leads to headaches, restlessness and indigestion. However, avoid its use if you suffer from depression. Studies have shown Hops to be a hypnotic, promoting sleep without disturbing alertness. This is one of only two plants in the genus cannabinaceae with the other being, as the generic name suggests, the Cannabis plant.

This Hop resin is very potent and the amount of the size of half a pea (about 50mg) is already strongly active. Do not take more than 200mg or there may be side effects. Effects may include slight drowsiness, slowing of heart rate, increase of colourful and vivid dreams.

Indian Valerian (Valeriana wallichi) Root Powder

Valerian

The drug derived from the dried rhizome and rootlets is called Tagar. At one time, it was considered an official medicine and was listed in the Indian and Colonial addendum for use in the Eastern colonies. Tagar is very similar in composition to Valerian, but contains a slightly larger amount of volatile oil. It has stimulant, depressant, sedative, neuroleptic and antispasmodic properties. This root powder can be a very useful sleep aid.

This plant has never failed me before. Whenever I have trouble falling asleep I take one big tsp. root powder in water. I can feel the effects after about half an hour and usually fall asleep quickly after. There are no side or after effects. E Walterfang
