Cocoa bean (also cacao bean, often simply cocoa and cacao) is the dried and fully fermented fatty seed of Theobroma cacao, from which cocoa solids and cocoa butter are extracted.
Historical evidence points to the use of cocoa in a medicinal capacity for over two thousand years, since the time of the ancient Mayan and Aztec civilisations and following its introduction to europe around 500 years ago.
Our capsules contain 500mg pure cocoa extract powder (10% theobromine).
Cacao has been found to be higher in antioxidant flavonoids than either red wine or green tea. It is also higher in antioxidants than most fruits and berries.
Constituents
The seeds contain xanthines, flavonoids, a fixed oil, and many constituents responsible for the flavour. It also contains very small amounts of endorphins, which are powerful painkillers. Phenethylamine (PEA) is also found naturally in cocoa beans.
Antioxidants
Cocoa beans contain polyphenols (similar to those found in wine) with antioxidant properties which are health beneficial. These compounds are called flavonoids and include catechins, epicatechins, and procyandins. The antioxidant flavinoids are found in the non-fat portions of the cocoa bean. The flavinoids also reduce the blood's ability to clot and thus reduces the risk of stroke and heart attacks.
Theobromine
Theobromine is a very mild stimulant with a mild diuretic action (increases the production of urine). Theobromine can be toxic to animals like dogs, cats, parrots and horses.
Caffeine
Cocoa beans contains a very low amount of caffeine, much less than found in coffee, tea and cola drinks.
Phenylethylamine
Phenylethylamine is a slight antidepressant and stimulant similar to the body's own dopamine and adrenaline.
Serotonin
Cocoa and dark chocolate can increase the level of serotonin in the brain. Serotonin levels are often decreased in people with depression and in those experiencing PMS symptoms.
Essential minerals
Cocoa beans are rich in a number of essential minerals, including magnesium, calcium, iron, zinc, copper, potassium and manganese.
Vitamins
A, B1, B2, B3, C, E and pantothenic acid.
More information
The mayan civilization worshipped the cacao tree for they believed it was divine in origin, thus its latin name, Theobroma cacao which means "food of the gods", and "cacao is a mayan word meaning "god food" .
Cocoa an aphrodisiac?
Chocolates reputation as an aphrodisiac seems to have begun with the aztecs who made a drink fermented from cocoa beans which they called xocolatl. In most parts of the world chocolate is associated with romance, and not without good reason. It was viewed as an aphrodisiac by the aztecs who thought it invigorated men and made women less inhibited.
So when it was first introduced to europe, it was only natural that chocolate quickly became the ideal gift for a woman to receive from an admirer or a loved one, and of course, vice versa. Now, chocolates reputation as an aphrodisiac is deeply embedded in the history of western civilization.
